What Happens When They’re ‘Just Not That into You’

After a magical first meeting, Betty was sure she had found “the one.” All the bells and whistles looked amazing as the sales rep showed off the product on his personal computer. The reports were pre-populated for her to view, and at that moment, everything just felt right.

Now it’s almost payday and Betty is racking her brain because the numbers just aren’t adding up. She’s called customer support three times, but no one seems to be available. Where are they when you really need them? Despite the magic of that first encounter, Betty was beginning to have second thoughts.

Several miscalculations later – not to mention $3,000 in wasted compensation – and Betty is working overtime to recoup the loss. Betty wondered what went wrong. Maybe it was their first day. Maybe it was just a glitch. Maybe we should give them another chance.

Or maybe … they’re just not that into you. Think about it for a second. If they were into you, they would make your job a whole lot easier, not harder.

Payroll is difficult enough without choosing someone difficult as a partner. Bottom line: Running payroll and managing your people don’t have to be complicated.

Three things to look for in ‘the one’
On your quest to find the perfect match, consider these three things:

  1. A single-application solution

When searching, beware of those disguising their technology as a single-source solution versus a single-application solution, because there is a difference. Those offering a single-source solution typically provide a product set that consists of multiple programs that have to be integrated. While it is possible they developed the programs in-house, it is more likely that they did not. Integrating systems can be tricky because they aren’t linked together. This can lead to users being forced to enter information over and over, products not syncing correctly and limitations and errors in reporting. However, with a true single-application solution, your data workflow is seamless. This means users enter information only one time; from there, the data updates in real time across all functionality, resulting in comprehensive and consistent reporting.

  1. A strategic partner

When you enter a relationship with someone, you look for compatibility; otherwise, it’s not going to work out, right? The same holds true in business partnerships: Look for a provider who is willing to help you facilitate your goals by helping you hire better, reduce compliance exposure, manage compensation or simply operate more efficiently.

This is a partnership, after all, so ensure your voice is going to be heard. Be sure your input is taken into consideration when enhancements to existing products or the development of new products are made. Find someone willing to work with you, not against you.

  1. Superb customer service

No one likes being caught in the exasperating phone tree, seemingly designed to trip you up and forward your call to the wrong department. When vetting providers, be sure customer service is a top priority. You can’t automate good service, so don’t settle for a company that does. Ask if you will have a dedicated specialist – someone who knows your business inside and out, and will be there when you call.
